To ride your motorcycle legally on public roads in Victoria, you need to register it. For full registration, you will need a valid Motorbike Roadworthy Certificate. This guide will help you understand the registration process and ensure you meet all local regulations and safety standards.
Standard Motorcycle Registration
Who Can Register?
Individuals must be at least 18 years old to register a motorcycle. If you are under 18, a parent or guardian can register the motorcycle for you. To ride, you need a valid learner permit or motorcycle licence. Learner and probationary riders can only ride motorcycles approved under the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS).
Corporations can register a motorcycle if they are companies or incorporated associations. However, motorcycles cannot be registered under a business name, trading name, or as part of an unincorporated group.
Recreational Motorcycle Registration
This option offers a cost-effective way to ride in designated areas without full registration.
Riders must be 18 years old and have a valid motorcycle learner permit or licence. Only two-wheeled motorcycles qualify; three- or four-wheeled vehicles do not.
Minimum Registration Requirements:
Riders must have a right-hand rear vision mirror, functional brakes on both wheels, one headlamp, rear red tail and brake lamps, a rear white number plate lamp, a silencing device that limits noise to 94 dBA or less, a horn or warning device integrated into the electrical system, and a chain guard to protect the rider from the front chain sprocket.
Operating Conditions:
Recreation motorcycles are only allowed to be operated on roads that meet the following criteria:
- They must be located outside “built-up areas,” defined as areas with speed limits of less than 100 km/h.
- They may also be operated on areas that are not classified as roads but are exclusively designated for the training and assessing of motorcycle learner permit holders by organisations approved by VicRoads for this purpose.
Note: Operation of recreation motorcycles is not permitted on declared freeways or arterial roads or on roads previously designated as forest roads under the Road Management Act 2004.
The motorcycle must not carry any load or passengers.
Riders are required to wear an approved protective helmet
Farm Motorcycle Registration
In Victoria, it is possible to conditionally register non-Australian Design Rules (ADR) compliant motorcycles for use on roads between farm properties for primary production activities. This type of registration allows you to ride a farm bike on parts of the Victorian road network within a 25-kilometre radius of a farm property without requiring full registration. It is specifically designed for primary producers and permits limited road use between farm properties.
To qualify, riders must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid motorcycle learner permit or license. Please note: that only non-ADR compliant two-wheeled motorcycles are eligible for this farm bike registration. ADR-compliant motorcycles are not eligible and must remain fully registered with standard motorcycle number plates.
Minimum Requirements:
The requirements are similar to recreational motorcycles, including mirrors, brakes, lamps, silencing devices, horns, and chain guards.
Operating Conditions:
Use is limited to roads within a 25 km radius of the nominated farm property. Operation is restricted to non-built-up areas and excludes freeways. The motorcycle cannot carry passengers and can only carry loads as specified by the manufacturer. Riders must wear approved protective helmets and carry the certificate of approved operations.
Disclaimer: This overview is intended to simplify the decisions around choosing which type of Motorcycle Registration is required (and hence if a Motorcycle Roadworthy Certificate is required). Please visit the VicRoads website for more details and specific registration requirements for each type of vehicle.
